Just to throw my 2c in the ring; I like Ayn Rand's work; it's a valuable and
straightforward statement. I also like E.E. Doc Smith's novels, and for much
the same reasons. They both give much the same warm fuzzy feeling and
floating mental constructs. Social success porn for scientists and people
who believe in certain forms of honesty and straightforwardness that don't
carry much weight in the world these days, it seems.
Come to think of it, I also liked the Well at the Worlds End. A lot. Same
deal.
You could do worse than trying to live your life by the high standards you
obtain from any of the above, my evaluation at least. Having read much of
the vitriol roaming the list the past few days, I confess that I'm confused
as all get-out as to why anyone gets so worked up about ideas that are
basically all to do with self-image, self-reliance and the path a person
chooses to chart through life. It's their life. Let them get on with it.
Funnily enough, apparently I'm an objectivist in a "tick the boxes, oh how
funny, I'm one of those" sense. Some of you seem to assume that objectivism
involves a party line, toeing, and an intrinsic awareness of the human
foibles behind it all. Odd.
But anyhow, storm in list-teacup. It's all opinions, it's all people, and
the choice is yours in the end anyway.
