My understanding is that now that his basic premises are being accepted,
he his moving on to even more radical proposals (i.e. his public
endorsement of cryonics) that he felt were counter-productive to mention
when he was still trying to get people to believe that molecular machines
were even possible.

Given this, it is understandable that he is still on the "outside".
