There is a terrific book, called 'The Muse in the Machine', by David
Gerlenter, which explores the need for programmers to include in the AI a
method to develop
*non-rational* or "unfocused" thought processes in order to achieve
intelligence at all. Noncausal "musing" abilities...
It is a great book, because it explores the relationships between
day-dreaming (nonproductive or non-problem-solving thoughts) and even
outright dreaming -- and the resulting cognitive/emotional associations which
beget "original" & "creative" ideas to spurt forth from the mind.
