How about Ronald Gross "The Independent Scholar" or any of his other
works on lifelong learning. He strongly promotes a non-authoritarian
but rigorous approach to continous self-education, and what is more,
provides very practical suggestions, methods, and examples. Some may
find his emphasis on the social sciences and classics annoying, but
he doesn't ignore the harder sciences and his systematic approaches
are fully applicable to them. Both inspirational and down to
earth.
