Eugen Leitl wrote wondering why people wouldn't prefer sandwich style slate
computers to digital paper.
1. Digital paper is here now. (Gyricon is about to offer its one sixteenth
of an inch rubbery style paper at 300 dpi black and white - posters with
larger pixels have been around for months in supermarkets. Signage deals are
up for eink for European trucking and train advertising.
2. Digital paper is fairly cheap ($200 a blank paperback?, less per page).
Mainly digital paper is one aspect of flexible systems for displays
integrated with computers which already see dozens of systems vying for
market share.
Many people like books and paper. Digital paper once loaded need require no
further power, has a refresh rate of maybe 5-10 million (gyricon has got to
5 million), is read-friendly and environmentally friendly compared to
traditional paper for newspapers say.
For me the Techno-Rapture and Singularity is all about flexibility. The more
systems the better! Personally I generally prefer to read books as paper
though current PC screens arenet too bad.
