Being a crazy Texan, I was attracted to *this* subject! Interestingly,
while I can see why they picked this area to launch rockets (it can pass
for some of the harsher and more arid parts of Mars), you could actually
launch from farther south in Texas and go out over the Gulf and only
pass over Florida on your way up. I think there was actually a group
trying to establish a "spaceport" on this basis down by Corpus Christi
back in the hey-day of private launch initiatives in the 90s, but I
haven't heard of it since.

As for hitting New Orleans -- it would probably be an improvement ...
