Short irrelevant story follows:
When I was a small boy a song came on the radio which went
"Heres to you, Joe DiMaggio,
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you..."
I was baffled, having never heard of him. Not long afterwards,
a TV commercial had a guy selling vacuum cleaners:
Hi. Im Joe DiMaggio. Brand x vacuum cleaners yakkity yak
and bla bla.
Not understanding celebrity endorsements at the time, I was
even more baffled. Why would a lonely nation look to the
