E.U. Yudkowsky noted:

<<Um... I suspect that the specific aspect Charlie Stross and I are both
referring to is the manner in which the US clearly wants war, is looking
for the slightest excuse, and failing the existence of any excuse will
manufacture one while claiming that it is Iraq's fault and we were provoked>>

Whether its admitted here or not, the notion of list member, Stoss, seemed
merely, polemic, and as you noted, yourself, other examples of causus belli,
could have been used. The example of the Reich's efforts at provocation are
likely better known to myself, perhaps, then Mr. Stoss.

I would submit for those who wish for a longer term peace that

a) It is a fact that Saudi Arabians funds propaganda, and jihadi movements.

b) They possess a lot of the world petroleum.

c) Iraq also possesses a lot of the world's petroleum.

d) Depose Saddam's regime and one free's up another petroleum source.

e) New petroleum source undermines the Saudi economy enough, to perhaps
effect their funding of jihadi guerilla movements. This is a good thing,
as Martha
    Stewart might say.

My own option for "saving the world" is basically to push for improved
gasoline milage, as well developing crop sources to tide us over till the oil
companies develop Western Africa, as the oil companies did in the backwater
called the Arab Gulf, some
60 years ago. Alternatively, there has to be a push for non-petroleum based
sources to take over. No Saudi Oil. Whether its iridium nitride solar cells,
or magnetic fusion, I do not care, but the new enerfy tech is not yet here,
and may not be for decades and decades.

Needless to say my revenges against the Islamic regimes that attacked the US
on 9-11, would be of such a nature, that their adherents would seek a less
painful path to paradise. I am not sure I would be pursuing a war against
Iraq first. Bet then, I seem not to conform to majoritarian values on this
list.
