That was the intention, but A accidentally killed C too. But B's
brother X (he was a bit weird) kills A, calling it avenging him (as I
said, he was a bit weird). D was an innocent bystander from B's
family who looked enough like X for the murderous little D to kill
him...

The game of vendetta is really like the IPD, but where you get
penalties and rewards based on your relatives actions too.

Reputations and that we play IPD in front of an audience are very
important to consider. With reputations it is easier to stabilize
cooperation, and it also explains why we sometimes behave nicely even
to complete strangers - we show just how cooperative we are for
everyone else.
