baseline knowledge.

Amara,
What I hear you doing is expressing opinions heavily influenced by
your present environment.
I have lived through two periods that struck me as very much alike in
their affect on the people around me. The first was Dec 07, 1941 and the
other was 9-11. I was struck both times by watching the people of the US
come together. In both cases they seemed to find something in singing
together -- I've never seen them do that on any other occasion in my memory
and certainly not to that extent.
We were gratified at the expressions of sympathy from around the
world. Then overseas the folks came to realise that they might also get
attacked by the Al Qaeda so they decided to hunker down and not attract
attention. They remembered that we were capitalists as an earlier writer
remarked and the criticism began.
Amara, we are not going to stand silent and be murdered in our own
country just to pacify some people in Europe that lack the courage to join
us.
However I have to agree with two recent themes I have heard on the
list. First, I think there are far better threads to be running. Our right
to defend ourselves should not even be in question. Second, this is politics
and politics is one of the most important of human concerns.
