Suppose, just suppose, that nature is unkind and in the technological
history of any civilization there will come a time when it will find
hints of a new force in nature, and suppose there is a very obvious
experiment to investigate that possibility, and suppose there is not
one scrap of information to think it was in any way dangerous.
And then BOOM, in ten seconds more energy is released than
the sun will give off in 5 billion years.

Hmm, that sounds a little like a Gamma Ray Burster.
