Charles,
Let me wander out in left field for a moment and I promise to come
back to home plate. <G>
Admiral James Stockdale was the Navy fighter pilot that responded when
our destroyer was attacked in the Bay of Tonkin.
In addition to later being a long term prisoner of war of the North
Vietnamese, Admiral Stockdale ran for Vice President of the United States and
authored at least two books.
In one of those books Admiral Stockdale recounts his missions in
support of our ship when the report of the attack came in.
To put it briefly there was never a report of an actual attack, there
were no ships in the area except ours, he also says the night was perfect for
spotting ships or patrol boats and that Johnson put up the whole deal.
I suggest you read Admiral Stockdale's account it is very enlightening.
