Our protein bodies are very much a part of who we are. Hormones, for
example, are important proteins that influence thought and behavior.
Consider testosterone in men as an obvious example. Testosterone is
produced in the testes, far from the brain and central nervous system,
yet it influences our personalities in very profound ways. Testosterone
travels through the blood to reach testosterone receptors located on the
cell membranes of neurons in the brain, the activation of which changes
our thoughts and behavior, thus modifying "who we are."

Many other hormones also affect our personalities, in women as well as
men.

So then if we hope to keep our personalities intact while leaving our
organic bodies behind, we will need to find a way to codify the rules
that control the endocrine system. That information exists in our genes.
