E. Shaun,
I worked in Canada off and on from about 1967 to 1985. I loved the
country and the people. You always treated me as an honored guest. I liked
up there well enough to ask two Canadian women to marry me -- but 30 years
apart. Still I would never ever say I understand you.
I see things I like, I see things I dislike but except for a single
comment that I have devised to answer questions about how I feel about Canada
I refrain from comments. When Canadian intimates ask me how I feel about
Canada I always answer by telling them how much I admire the place but add
that I would never ever live there -- "you are too damned civilized to suit
me." And you really are.
In reading your letter it occurs to me that you seem to like us, you
understand us well enough to avoid getting shot at but past that you have not
yet gotten a clue.
But as I do with Canadian friends when I am in Canada I am here to
enjoy your company and to listen to your comments thoughtfully but with no
committment.
However I must add that it means a lot to me to have someone as
independent as you are living peaceably as my neighbor.
Ron h.

BTW, about those two Canadian women that I tried to marry? They both said,
"No." Where else can you find women so kind to a man?"
