       For back ground let me say that I regard the columnist Thomas Sowell
as one of the smarter people in America. I don't always agree with him and
he is often onto something I find uninteresting but he is sharp.
       I had always believed the party line that you wrote. It is the
prevalent position of most commentators as far as I can tell.
       Then one year just before Christmas I read a column where Thomas
Sowell to my surprise recommended The Bell Curve saying specifically that it
was not racist. That surprised me as the gentleman is black.
       In any case I read the book and totally reject any notion that it is
racist in any way. But I read carefully enough to believe I know what is
distasteful to many readers. If you read his predictions of the consequences
of what he found -- I think it even scared the authors. But it ain't racial
in nature.
