Robert,

Have you tried full spectrum lighting? I do not suffer from SAD but I
nevertheless have two full spectrum lamps in my home. These lamps are
designed to produce light identical to that from the sun. As you
probably know, SAD is thought to caused at least in part by
under-exposure to sun light.

Yes, Omega-3 fatty acids are certainly called for, particularly
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is the primary structural fat found in
the brain. Studies show that DHA is effective in fighting depression.
(DHA may also help with cognitive abilities: human breast milk contains
DHA while commercial "baby formulas" do not. At least one study has
shown that people who were breast-fed have improved scores on
intelligence tests vs those who received commercial "baby formula.")

I would also suggest SAMe (S-Adenosyl-Methionine) for depression. This
is a natural substance found in every cell of the body. In Europe it is
a prescription drug commonly used for depression. It is available over
the counter in the USA. It's thought that SAMe increases the flexibility
and permeability of neuronal cell membranes, increasing the sensitivity
of receptors for neurotransmitters, and/or that it is increases the
availability of neurotransmitters. Studies show that it works quicker
and with fewer side effects than pharmaceutical antidepressants.

In the US, SAMe can be purchased only in tablet form. In Europe it is
used in injectable form, which may be more effective due to improved
bioavailability. I have overseas sources for the injectable form if this
is of interest to you.
