The main reason for the mess is that since these effects only happen near
the speed of light, it is difficult for authors to verify their work
before publishing.

Also, there may not be as many contradictions as it seems. Because of
the doppler effect, what the two twins experience is different from what
the two twins SEE the other experiencing. Some authors take the doppler
effect into account and try to describe what each twin sees. Others just
assume the twins are smart enough to take light delays into account and
describe what each twin deduces the other twin is really experiencing
(i.e. just the relativistic effects without the doppler effects.) If a
third party comes along and tries to compare what one person says the
twins "see", and what another says the twins "experience", they seem
contradictory.
