The alarming thing was that they *didn't have a clue*, and admitted it
gladly. It could have been the Andromeda Strain from the Deeps for all they
knew.

The program ended with the withdrawal of a big offer of funding when
venture capital dried up a while back, and I got the impression that
alternative nonbiotic explanations had emerged. Still, a fascinating
program (despite the longueurs introduced by about 20 minutes of tiresome
padding: gargoyles from seven angles, Philippa Uwins walking briskly back
and forth with her backpack and dogs, etc).
