There was a radio show about nanobes that aired here a few months ago.

According to this show, the existence of living things as small as nanobes
is controversial. This radio show didn't mention nanobes eating lab
equipment. Could be the researchers consider the destruction of lab
equipment by nanobes more like the destruction of equipment by acid than
eating in the sense of metabolizing. Thus, you wouldn't have to worry about
such things as airborne nanobe infection.
