Quite true. I haven't been able to locate the New York Times poll that you
have mentioned, though I spent quite a while looking for this poll. The only
poll of any meaning, that I have located is at the following site:
http://www.jmcc.org/publicpoll/results/2002/no45.htm
I have no idea, whether this is
A) and Israeli site
B) a Palestinian site
C) Neither
But it does has a question which apparently suggests that a majority of
Palestinian Arabs have their goal in site, to the tune of 51%. The date on
this poll is apparently from June 2, 2002. Please refer to this website for
clarification.
Q.7 In your opinion, what should be the end result of the current Intifada,
is it improving the negotiation conditions for Palestinians, ending
occupation based on UN Resolution 242 and the establishment of the
Palestinian state or liberating all of historic Palestine? Total West

Improve negotiation conditions for Palestinians 3.5 2.6 5.0
Ending occupation on basis of UN Resolution 242 and establishing the
Palestinian state 42.8 40.7 46.4
Liberating all of historic Palestine 51.1 54.1 45.9

I don’t know 1.6 1.5 1.8

<<I wonder *why* everyone says "dismantle the illegal settlements"?
Why not simply have Israel pay the Palestinians for the land and
have the settlers live under Palestian rule? There are Palestinians
that live quite peacefully under Israeli rule.>>
Surely some settlements ought to be abandoned, if there is any agreement with
the Palestinian Arabs. But such an agreement, in light of Oslo, and in light
of Intifada 2, to be something not rooted in reality. I can never fault the
majority of the Arab governments, and peoples, at least amongst themselves,
declaring what they need. They are honest, at least, to each other, in this
matter.
