Italy is not a 'unified' with a strong national identity.
The identity is with one's local region.

Maggioranza Comunisti Italiani Rifondazione Comunista

and you will see a number of administrative web pages of
many provinces and communes that have 'communist party'
administrators.

(Italy is divided into twenty regions, which are each divided
into a number of provinces, with the smallest administrative
unit being the 'commune', which can range in size from a large
town to a country village. An outlying hamlet of a commune is
called a frazione. )
