More sociograms

I have explored a new kind of list sociogram which seems really
promising. The nodes are people and subject lines, marked blue and
orange respectively. This way we can see which subjects are linked
to who, forming a snapshot of the list traffic.

An example can be found at
http://akira.nada.kth.se/~asa/Extropians/subject.gif (sorry, huge
picture and rather illegible text - just proof of concept). The
big "star" in the main cluster is the other side of 29 thread, the
"backbone" is the politics threads while on the right are the zine
threads. At the bottom are a number of astronomy related threads
clustered around Amara (of course).

This could definitely be automatically generated every day (the
beauty is that we don't have to try to parse who replied to whom,
it could read the titles from
http://www.extropy.org/exi-lists/extropians/date00.html), but the
display poses some problems: we want text large enough to be read,
but that would likely require a very large picture size. Maybe a
clickable map is the best solution, or a viewer applet. Any
thoughts?
