I heard all about the farm bill on NPR and read about it in the
libertarian and paleocon press. I was passed quickly by usual
Congressional standards.
BTW, farm subsidies and the like get passed often by tagging them onto
other legislation. They are quite common, so, in a way, I can
understand most people not paying attention. Also, for decades now, the
American farmer has been viewed as an institution that must not die by
the politicos and the Media. Also, when I try to tell them that no one
is really moaning the passing of the mom and pop video store, people
tell me farming is different than business because it involves food.
When I try to put the idea in the context of rich farmers and big agro
firms getting tax funding, most people lose interest.
(Needless to say, I'm against farm welfare too.:)
Cheers!
