Invariably it seems that the natural evolution of
institutions is to perpetuate themselves via
preventing the solution of whatever problems they were
supposedly intended to solve.
Thus, it should not be surprising that, after Nixon
poured all that money into the National Cancer effort,
successful cancer research slowed dramatically, or
that the War on Drugs has turned into the biggest
source of drugs and gratuitous violence on the globe -
outside of Africa, anyway, where the vast amounts of
foreign aid from the West and Japan have financed
endless cycles of corruption and genocide.
So, here in beknighted Orange Kounty, KA, the "2nd
Silicon Valley," it should be no surprise to find the
libraries at the forefront of information denial and
censorship. Never mind that the Supreme Court
recently ruled out denying Federal funds to libraries
without porn screening software filters. OC leads the
way to the Right.*
Today, when I went to the Extropy.org site and clicked
on "communities..." and then "on-line lists", or some
such thing that is practically reflex, I got a message
that this operation has been cancelled due to system
restrictions. Turns out that after a 3 year battle to
finally get use of copy and paste and text search, the
powers that be here have decided to restrict us to a
single window at a time.
Of course, I figured out a hack around it, and now
have three windows open, and as many more as I want,
but most users would never figure that out.
The rationalle? Same as all the useless traffic
lights costing thousands of dollars each and never
synchronized, creating well over half of the
petro-pollution in S. California. If you have the
power, you will eventually use it.
*Breaking news - the San Francisco Chronicle allegedly
ran a major story based on FOI research that finally
uncovered documents proving that Ronny Reagan
illegally conspired with the FBI as CA governor to
kick various political enemies out of their positions
in various state institutions, among other felonies
that he doesn't remember. Haven't had time to check
out the actual story yet...
