The frontier-like lifestyle wasn't simpler, it was faaaar more complex.
Look at how little one must know to survive in the modern world.
One can really be very ignorant and grossly incompetent in every
way, yet still run little risk of failing to survive.

You can have both. Life is simpler now than ever before,
and getting simpler all the time. How much does a modern
need to know about cars in order to drive? How much does
one need to know about computers in order to compute?
How much does one need to know today to get a job that
will pay enough for a prole to trade his wages for consumables
at the local grocer?
I am surprised at how often I *still* hear people talk about
times being simpler in the past. I see the Frontier House
families using every fiber of muscle and every brain cell
just to make a reasonable attempt at survival, and still none
of the families would likely have survived the harsh
Montana winter on the frontier.
May we all live to see even more simple times. spike
