It's illegal to keep wild animals as pets in Australia, but members of
wildlife rescue groups take care of orphaned babies and release them into
the wild when they're old enough to take care of themselves. Wombats are
considered endangered species. I've read that their range is now limited to
southern and central Victoria. Damien and I recently made a trip from
Melbourne to Mt. Buller and passed a couple of dead ones on the side of the
road. We stopped to take a closer look at one of the carcasses, and I was
amazed by the size of the claws and sturdiness of the front legs.
Here's a photo of a baby wombat and baby kangaroo who were raised together.
Caution: this is a geocities site, but the photo's so cute it's worth
putting up with the popup ads.
