I also strongly endorse the practice of maintaining a good record of one's
life, be it in a diary or by other means. I've never been a good diarist,
but I'm a fertile (some would say gone to weeds) correspondent. I've kept a
copy of almost every letter or email I've every written. As Jefferson said,
"The truest history of a man's life is to be found in his letters."
While some might say that it's self-absorbed to do so, I find quite a bit of
insight to be gained from occasionally going back and re-reading fairly large
selections from the library of my own correspondence. I feel like I am
having something of a dialogue with other of my selves, from other times. It
tends to keep me honest with myself, I think, and aware of the vectors of my
own development.
