I was disappointed by this article for two reasons.
(a) The technologies being discussed, with perhaps the exception
of the diabetes treatments are far from "the clinic".
(b) The complete lack of mention of the publication of Nanomedicine.
It remains unclear to me whether or not the new publishers of
"Technology Review" really have an understanding of the
technology trends or the real sources of innovation. Witness
the "Ray Kurzweil created a hubbub with his idea that we will
soon be able to "download" ourselves into machines and live
forever".
(a) To my knowledge downloading (uploading) was invented
separately by Minsky and Moravec circa the mid-1980's.
Kurzweil may be spreading the meem but he did not invent it.
(b) The question of "living forever" is still very very
dubious as discussions on the Extropian list often point out.
Publication for the masses that turns into ca-ca -- I'll stick
with Gina's (Nanogirl) News.
