I'd certainly describe Dennett's work as "important" and "compelling"
and "brilliant", but I wouldn't come anywhere close to "beautiful".
He's a scientist, and a better writer than most, but that isn't saying
much. Everyone should read CE, but it is a bit of an ordeal to do so,
much like suffering through Rand. An important experience, but not
always a pleasant one.
If only a great writer like Hofstaedter or Dawkins would cover the
same subject matter, it would be much better known (yes, Hofstaedter
has covered a bit of it--but not nearly in Dennett's detail).
