I designed the electronics and PCB for the homebrew STM with Jim Rice (in
1995), the one mentioned on the page above.
The paper our STM was based on had serious flaws with its coarse approach,
as does the STM that resulted. But it works, and I just barely got atomic
resolution, in air, on HOPG.
And I did successfully use a (certain) sound card for the d/a and a/d
functions.
