They did have great respect when the technology level was such that it
was a significant contest as to surviving a hunt, and medical care was
non-existent. Hunters today also have a healthy respect for their prey,
especially those that elude the hunter well, but they don't get the
sensual gratification out of the experience that you would see with
human on human predation. This unhealthy form of predation is an
indication of how sorely society needs the hunt to maintain social
sanity.
