Tides on earth are caused by both the sun and moon, though the moon's
effect dominates. If the moon were removed, tides would not entirely
stop.

Because of the moon, the path of the earth in orbit is wobbly, like a
rosette with 12 petals. If the moon were gone, the earth's orbit would
be a much smoother ellipse.
