Brian,
I believe a good text for your study would be "Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Watson, Alberts, et. al. The last edition was a few years ago (1994?) and it is due to be updated.
Another text I have seen is "Asking About Cells". It is less detailed than MBoC and some people have preferred it as a starting place.
