Keep in mind that rats are nocturnal animals and we are diurnal. This makes
them less than an ideal test model for humans (there cycles aren't simply
reversed from ours, but are different). One of the people in in the
psychology department here at Monash has finished PhD where he was
developing a diurnal model using the African Palm Squirrel. Over the coming
years we should here more and more sleep studies based around this or
dirunal animals.
