You're missing one important fact; if banks and retail don't need many
employees because most of their work can be handled over the Web, then the
sacked employees can set up their own retail and banking sites in
competition with their old employers. If all you need to be a retail company
or a bank is a web site, then anyone can do it; though obviously in the
banking case reputation could be a problem.
