No one ever does anything useless? Hah!
Even if true, the only plausible form of that is "no one does anything useless
to them". So ethical reflection may be fun, or impress one's philospher
peers, or let one get away with a lifestyle with no heavy lifting. These
would be useful to the reflector without providing any use to society's
progress.
Just as extropian or Usenet yakking about technology has little to do with
creating new technology and a fair bit with expressing ourselves and feeling
communal.
