To space without rockets ?

Hello all,

I tried to find something like this on the Net, but since I
could not find anything it's:

A: a stupid idea
B: It's new
C: I should look better

As I tried to draw, could we make some "flexible" pipes,
that have attached balls with a light gas. This way the
structure rises from earth to space.
Note that I'm not familiar with all the different layers of "air"
between here and space, so I don't know if the gas trick
works. Maybe instead of balls filled with gas, you could use
rockets, that point to space, fed from the ground with fuel.
A pipe of 100 KM, isn't a problem to build, is it ?
Anyway, once the structure (one long pipe) is up, inside
there is a "screw-elevator" that can go up and down !

Could a structure like this work ? or are there some
laws of nature, that prevent this.

Greetings,

Berrie
