I imagine airships will only become common when the fossil fuels on which
prop and turbine aircraft depend starts to skyrocket in price, making
conventional aircraft an expensive luxury.
I can further see governments trying to reserve fuel supplies for the use
of their militaries; no sense letting the pace of warfare slow down...
Still, flying battleships would have a certain Victorian appeal.
