Entertainment markets provide an excellent example of how consumer demand
overcame supply-side predjudices to support the work of diverse cultures.
That new forms of expression (e.g., minstrel, jazz, blues) popular in
minority cultures often reached the masses only after their introduction via
like-hued intermediaries (e.g., Al Jolsen, Bennie Goodman, Bob Dylan) shows
that race probably hindered rather than helped the process. Nonetheless,
excellence eventually overcame racism.
