I don't care for capital punishment either, even though I vigorously
support the recognition of a legal right to use deadly force to defend
oneself from threats to one's life. But once you've got someone in
handcuffs and leg irons, they're no longer a genuine threat to anyone's
life, so it's no fair to go poking them with lethal injections.

I've always thought that ostracism and exile were among the least
offensive extreme punishments. Of course, people who are into revenge
consider inoffensiveness a disadvantage among punishments.
