A new year, a new era

Last year, I wrote about how 1995 had been a year of surprises and
now-shock. As expected, 1996 beat it by far. Possible martian bacteria,
quantum error correction, ice on the moon, the wild spread of the Internet
and transhumanism and more advances in neuroscience, computer science,
physics and biochemistry than one can list. 1997 will most likely be even
more radical. I might be one of the resident conservatives on these lists,
but at times like this even I feel like a singularitarian.

On a hopefully not less earthshaking scale, 1996 also saw the founding of
Transhumanistiska Föreningen Aleph here in Sweden, seeking to promote
transhumanism in the public debate, and Homo Excelsior, seeking to
provide an useful information channel between transhumanists on the net
(and hopefully beyond!). Being involved with them both (I'm bad at
avoiding responsibility) I certainly look forward to see how they will
evolve in 1997, and especially representing them on Extro3!

I hope 1997 will become just as interesting as 1996, bringing us one year
towards ascension!
