Not Freudian, I call it Left Wing from the top
of my id. The show is excellent, with terrific
acting. The scripts make me crazy sometimes, with
the lefty slant, however most of my reading and
listening comes from a far left point of view. I
see little or no point in listening to those views
that are like my own. No conflict, no thought.
Preaching to the choir.
That being said, there was one scene on Left Wing
a couple weeks ago that made me howl. Donna has
the hots for a navy commander. She questions
him on why the navy has 400 dollar ash trays. He
takes one, puts it on his desk and whacks it with
a wrench, at which time it breaks into three pieces
with no sharp edges. He explains that the sailors
live a different life out there.
In reality, if an admiral ordered a 400 dollar ash
tray, she can forget ever getting promoted again. If
a commander destroyed a 400 dollar ash tray, he would
likely face court martial.
The navy uses stamped metal ash trays, 10 for a buck.
I have one, given to me by a former sailor.
The navy does not waste money. Or if they do, its not
on silliness like ashtrays.
That scene proved to me that Aaron Sorkin desperately
needs two things: 1) an advisor who knows something
about the military, and 2) to ease up on the
psychedelic mushrooms. spike
