My friend Dak (a DJ/software guy, also of Melbourne, Australia) comments:

"I think that even within our own subculture there are strata and divisions,
even given that we are on the same minimal resource allocation... the
proverbial cool thing. Who's got it and who aint. If Bill gates walked into
the glow bar, he'd probably be trotting in at the lowest social strata, and
the bar chick would serve him last just because he's a pox awful dancer with
crapola taste in music.

The real issue is how long the capitalist forces that will probably control
the basic bootstrapping material (initial assemblers) will try and drag out
a class structure based on material allocation.

Myself, I'm looking forward to the time where good ideas and originality are
more valuable than resource control. And where a tacky hand made pot that's
been loved and made with love has more worth than a mass produced diamond
vase. Though of course you could then duplicate the tacky pot and produce it
on a grand scale. I think we may well live to see a dramatic new age of
kitch.

This came through music dsp, haven't checked it myself but it may interest
you... I'm sorting through weeks of mail...

The University of Iowa provides some recordings of electromagnetic
plasma waves "translated" to the audio spectrum. Most sounds are
rather crude, but still interesting; they are somewhat similar to what
one can hear with a normal radio receiver.
