Robert all I hear you doing is saying the same thing in a different way. We
can't define common good or a set of goals in specific terms that satisfy us
-- when the democratic system fails then we turn to autocratic methods. I,
too, can wave my hands vaguely in the air and define the common good in
non-specific terms but that doesn't answer the problem.
As to "sustainability" I suspect that is a fish of the same strong
odor. Capitalism was not able to sustain the buggy whip manufacturing sector
either, but Mr. Ford employed those folks just fine building cars.
Capitalism was unable to sustain the wood for fuel supply in England either
but switched to coal just fine.
I personally don't want a world that is static and sustainable at a
fixed level of technology or trade.
