Re Vingean "localizers"... just for information, a few people had similar
ideas... in 1982 I wrote a novel (unpublished) while at university called
"The Godwind" which contained the idea of a distributed supercomputing
facility embodied in the dust structures of an alien planet, which also
supported a planetary AI that appeared in physical nodes (apparent bodies)
and applied mythological manipulation in interacting with the local culture.
While overlaying of sensory information and constructed informational maps
is an older idea, overlay of VR interfacing is more recent in the generic
sense (as far as I know). Using constructed bodies as vehicles for
neurologically interfacing "group minds" is something I was writing about in
fiction (unpublished) in 1981. Similar notions are embedded in sf writing in
the 50s in prototype.
