>40-year-old freshman never seemed too appealing.

I completed my PhD at age 40. One of my friends in the States
finished his PhD at age 43. I have a colleague in Germany / Netherlands
who will be finishing his at age 44. All of us started our programs
while in our late 30s/early 40s.

I think it shows a deficiency of applying our own views if people
don't take the long view for their lives, such as entering school at
ages: 30s- 40s 50s- .... And if few people try to do it, the educational
system won't change and allow such avenues to be reasonably possible.

You might consider the European education system as you are less
likely to be burdened with the typical U.S. $20-40,000 debt when you
are finished. (With a Master's degree, you are more-or-less in line
with the diplom students, and can begin work immediately on a thesis
topic without more years of coursework.)
