Sounds reasonable to me. If you make reference to someone as an authority,
you should be willing to identify them. (Well, the comment about Russ
Limbaugh was snide, but for all we know true.)
That said, I must acknowledge that it's frequently impossible to specify
particular sources. In that case, one should just do the best one can.
E.G.:
In (a or several) conversations that I overhear (on a bus/ at a train
station/in a fancy resturant/at a lecutre on sociology). <== select a
choice, or create your own sentence. But that's the kind of information that
I understood was being requested.
