Like you guessed, this kind of match happens continuously on computers
around the world, usually involving a couple of other programs as
well. Machine-machine matches are more than plentiful, the scarcity is
for public good human players vs machine matches since humans tend to
be either shy about losing, busy, or they tend to want money for them.
Btw, in one of the most quoted (and i would say respected, because of
the number of games they play) machine vs machine tournaments, the SSDF
rating list, Deep Fritz is ranked 6th, and Junior 7 (Deep Junior is not
an official name) is ranked 7th. The tournament claims to have played
87000 games (only a few hundred involving each of the above though).
