Oh tiff! If this expert is so convinced that in a future where he can't
Dysonise stuff there will be inheritable immortality (which yes there can
be) [as you rightly point out they haven't cottoned on to alteration of
existing genomic proteomic structures]... then how's about we only have
children every millenia and zip off into interstellar space? Not enough? How
about every million years? This discussion based on physical space
limitations is going to go nowhere until the Singularity. In the meantime,
common sense tells one that looking young and not dying for a century or two
is perfectly fine. In any case this "expert" hasn't realized that simply
modifying a person's lifespan isn't enough, if they aren't reset or
continuously modified by nanotech or other more advanced mechanisms there
will have to be changes to the neural architecture to allow for memory spans
and compensate for never-before-experienced neural effects. So the tech
level is higher than she understands. Besides, these questions all flow
together. That's the nature of the Singularity. Nanotech gives us the power
to alter everthing on Earth, within the laws of physics. Loving and helping
one another, accenuating our choices, that's what it should be about, not
juggling types and lengths of death sentences. That's what the previous 500
million years plus have been about. That's just about over.
