Because we are.

For all the advances in communication technology and in all the little
ways that we "connect" with people on a daily basis, we can never be
sure that what we're attempting to communicate is being received and
digested to the degree that we would like.

I can write about the dreams I have. I can make paintings, compose
songs or create an elaborate 3-d animation. No matter which way I
attempt to externalize and share my experience, the audience will not
share my experience to the fullest extent possible.

So in that respect we're disconnected. Stuck, trapped. Some ones and
zeroes (or maybe an interpretive dance or two :) can slip out... but we
aren't yet able to fully share who we are.

This is, to me, what the Singularity is all about. A means to open up
and connect with others in direct and powerful ways. A way to ensure
that the parts of me I wish to externalize can be shared with the
proper fidelity.

Until then, language, art and other means of self-expression will
ultimately fail because of the ever-present doubt that our messages are
actually getting across.

I'd ask if you know what I mean, but what would be the point? :)
